The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most famous reef sites in the world covering over 344,000 square kilometres. This is about the size of 70 million football pitches. In fact, it is so large that it can actually be seen from Space! The Reef is home to a third of the world’s colourful coral. It is also home to almost 5,000 marine and mammal species. We guarantee that you’ll find Nemo!

There are plenty of tours which take you out to the beautiful reef. Most people tend to go for a day tour. However, if you wanted to maximise your experience there are some epic overnight tours.
Most dive sites in the world do not allow scuba diving unless you have a certified license. In contrast, there are plenty of tours on the Great Barrier Reef which offer introductory dives. This is basically where someone without diver training or certification can experience scuba diving under the guidance of a recreational diving instructor. If this is something that scares you or doesn’t tickle your fancy, at least stick with snorkelling. You’ll still have a fantastic experience.
Top Tips for Diving the GBR

If you want to maximise your experience, look for the tours that depart from Port Douglas rather than Cairns. These tend to be a little bit more expensive but definitely worth it. They go to the best spots on the Reef!
If you don’t have an underwater go pro, become friends with someone who does!
Don’t touch the coral. Touching it can kill it. It’s a living organism and we should all do our bit to preserve the reef.
If you want to Scuba Dive, make sure you check you don’t suffer from any medical conditions which might hinder you from doing it. It’s also important to be aware that it is not advised to scuba dive if you have had any breathing problems or ear problems in the past
Bring a hat, sun cream and plenty of water!
If you’re really serious or curious about diving, there are some awesome companies that do overnight tours which include night dives
Choose your tour carefully. Remember, the cheapest isn’t always the best. We work with almost every tour operator on the Great Barrier Reef. Drop us a message and we’ll find you the perfect tour that is tailored to you.
Basically, the Great Barrier Reef is a must-do. If you are really into your marine life and snorkelling/diving then pick a more serious tour provider. If you're not too fussed then we definitely recommend doing at least a day tour.
It's definitely one to tick off the bucket list. Message us if you want any travel advice or have any questions.
Have a great day!
